Terry Hutson The name of Marion Island is familiar to most South Africans, but few are likely to have gone anywhere near the place. From time to time the name appears in the newspapers or on television, usually in connection with a visit to that inhospitable place by the supply vessel SA Agulhas. Sometimes the news is that one of the scientists manning its weather station needs medical care and a navy ship has been despatched to the southern Indian Ocean to perform a rescue. More recently Marion was again in the news with the arrest of a Uruguayan fishing vessel named Viarsa 1. The Spanish-crewed ship had fled the length of the Southern Ocean, hotly pursued if one can be forgiven for using such an expression about such a cold place by an Australian sea fishery patrol boat named Southern Supporter. During this weeks-long saga the supply ship SA Agulhas, which was on her way to Marion Island with building material for a new weather station, was brought into the chase. The first explorers to see Marion Island were probably the Dutch – there is a record of the ship Maerseveen under the command of Barent Barentszoon Lam, which sailed past the islands in on the way to the Dutch East Indies. Due to an error in reporting the position of the two islands neither could be found again by subsequent Dutch sailors. Lam was followed more than a hundred years later by the French explorer Marion du Fresne on board his ship Le Mascarin, who called on 13 January It was in honour of this man that the main island was eventually named.

That’s what I — and so many others — have been searching for in the midst of this deeply distressing news cycle. I found that escape in the form of a charming, uplifting and, at times, moving period drama called Anne with an E, an adaptation of the beloved childhood classic Anne of Green Gables. Snobbery about romcoms goes all the way back to the s Anyone with a well-thumbed copy of the novel will know instantly the significance of this show’s title. Set in turn-of-the-century Canada, the show’s setting bears no resemblance to modern day life as we know it — which is what makes this series such an effective way to take a break from politics, our timelines, and the world in general.
Anne is a young orphan who gets dispatched from an orphanage in Nova Scotia to the farm of two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, on Prince Edward Island. The Cuthberts had intended to adopt a boy who could help with the farm, so the arrival of a red-headed, freckle-faced little girl with a fondness for long words comes as quite the surprise — a surprise that Marilla doesn’t intend to keep at Green Gables.
It’s touch and go for quite a while as to whether Anne will stay on with the Cuthberts, but Anne pulls her weight around the farm, milking the cows, collecting the eggs first thing, and doing her utmost to prove her worth. After a great deal of toing and froing, Marilla finally relents and decides to raise Anne as a Cuthbert. But, now that Matthew and Marilla see Anne as their daughter, a new challenge arises: There, she sits next to her new best friend, her “kindred spirit” Diana Barry, whose snobby mother won’t let her play with Anne.
She also finds an academic rival in the shape of Gilbert Blythe, who shares her talent for spelling. Despite her struggles to fit in, Anne’s sense of self never wavers.

In , in order to encourage an expansion of the Dutch settlements, the English resurveyed Oude Dorp which became known as “Old Town” and expanded the lots along the shore to the south. These lots were settled primarily by Dutch families and became known as Nieuwe Dorp meaning “New Village” , which later became anglicized as New Dorp.
Captain Christopher Billopp , after years of distinguished service in the Royal Navy, came to America in in charge of a company of infantry. The following year, he settled on Staten Island, where he was granted a patent for acres 3. According to one version of an oft-repeated but inaccurate tale, Captain Billopp’s seamanship secured Staten Island to New York, rather than to New Jersey: Mayor Michael Bloomberg perpetuated the myth by referring to it at a news conference in Brooklyn on February 20, As part of this process, Staten Island, as well as several minor neighboring islands, was designated as Richmond County.
In and , the English divided the island into four administrative divisions based on natural features: These divisions later evolved into the four towns of Castleton , Northfield , Southfield , and Westfield. In , the population was

Reply While we worked on a number of smaller projects last summer, our big one was an excavation at Orwell Corner Historic Village that spanned nearly two months, beginning in July and wrapping up at the end of August. The site we worked on was located behind the interpretive center, and just outside the village. It was brought to our attention by the site director, who had been keeping his eye on it for some time. Consisting of a large depression obscured by vegetation, it certainly looked like a promising site, and although we had only planned to spend weeks excavating, we quickly changed our minds when we began to dig in and realized that it was chock full of artefacts.
Aside from the wealth of artefacts uncovered, this site proved unique in two other respects. We might know who the people were in a general sense, but with the site in Orwell, we were able to take things to a whole new level. The second thing that makes this site unique is its location. Not only is it situated in a historic village, but it is also extremely accessible to the public, being just off the road on the way into the village.
